Nonsurgical Follicle Treatments

He has perfected follicle treatment techniques using transplant surgery, as well as nonsurgical techniques, to alleviate the frustration of male and female baldness . At our office, we take baldness very seriously. Dr. Gershenbaum has completed extensive training to become certified in transplant surgery.

Nonsurgical Treatment Plans

At the Aventura Center, we look at all possible methods of regrowing follicles.Area residents can count on the doctor to work with your specific needs to formulate the best possible treatment plan.

The cause and degree of the baldness, one’s age, and budget will help determine which medicine or combination of medicines is the most appropriate treatment. For many, the best results will be achieved by combining medical treatments with surgery.

Treatment medications not approved by the FDA are most often a waste of money and some may even be harmful. The vast number of over-the-counter products that guarantee to stop the loss of follicles and stimulate new growth, some of which claim to have been "discovered" by a doctor or "based on an ancient formula," are misleading. Other than the FDA approved medications, very few, if any of the vast number of growth products on the open market have ever been rigorously tested for safety and efficacy in properly designed clinical trials. Claims or "guarantees" of efficacy are rarely based upon good science. Claims are more likely to be testimonials from presumably satisfied users of the product.

The FDA has approved only two medications – after extensive testing for safety and efficacy in clinical trials:

  • Minoxidil (Rogaine®) - topical, over-the-counter
  • Finasteride (Propecia®) - oral prescription medication

Neither product "guarantees" to stop the depletion and/or stimulate growth of new follicles in all cases. Follicle treatment in men with male baldness was an unexpected side effect of minoxidil, which was originally developed to lower blood pressure. Minoxidil (Rogaine®) is the only non-prescription medication proven to slow down or stop the loss of follicles and stimulate growth of new follicles in people with androgenetic alopecia. The results of minoxidil will vary from individual to individual and cannot be predicted. Minoxidil does not produce instant results and does not work for everyone. Topical minoxidil (Rogaine®) is the only therapy available for women with androgenic alopecia.

Finasteride (Propecia®) can have under-masculinizing effects on a male fetus; therefore, finasteride should not be taken or handled by a woman who is pregnant or may become pregnant. Minoxidil appears to improve blood flow in follicles, however, the mechanisms for action are not fully understood.
